Beauty Advent Calendars
Are they worth the hype?
Christmas time is closing in.
Advent calendars have been around since the 19th century and I have always grown up with a festive chocolate treat on each morning of December, but in recent years, advent calendars have undergone a dramatic, and expensive shift.
The popularity of beauty advent calendars has skyrocketed and with it, each year our expectations are rising. Which brands can bring us the best value? The best products? In the most beautifully curated packaging? Let’s dive in and take a look at what 2024 has to offer the Christmas beauty addicts!
Christmas waves a magic wand over the world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.

Selfridges
Starting off strong with Selfridges, priced at £250 and worth over a whopping £1000. It's packed with luxury skincare, fragrance, colour cosmetics and well-being products from leading brands such as REFY, Neom, Charlotte Tilbury and Tatcha to name a few. The majority of products, however, are mini or travel size which is slightly underwhelming to say how much it breaks the bank but this is largely to do with the fact that the products are from luxury ranges.
As for the packaging, this is an innovative layout idea to include a ‘jewellery box’ style mirror and will be useful tool for beauty lovers to apply the products in and store them. The colour of the box, although represents the Selfridges brand well with it being bright yellow, doesn’t feel particularly ‘Christmassy’. The yellow is also unlikely to tie in well with most people’s dressing table so the element idea of re-using the box is restricted by this.
Rituals
Next on our list is Ritual’s premium advent calendar. Retailing at £172.00 and worth an incredible, £314.90, which is almost double its cost! The ideal gift for self-care enthusiasts to find their zen this festive season.
‘With 24 miniature houses unveiling surprises daily, from quaint cottages to our bustling House of Rituals flagship store, this Dutch heritage-inspired scene brings joy behind every door and window, creating a magical holiday atmosphere’
It also contains seven full-size products which is much more than most beauty calendars.
The box is beautifully decorated and well-thought-out however, it does not have much use outside of Christmas aside from its outer packaging which could be used to house something as a gift next year.

Boots
The Boots Beauty Full Size 12 Day Advent Calendar is listed at £74.25 but is worth £349.59 which is spectacular value for money. This calendar stands out against the others since all the items are full sized rather than minis or travel sized. It has a great variety of products since Boots as a store carry a wealth of different beauty brands. Not only does it have a range of brands but also product types.
It's listed as a ‘luxury beauty advent calendar contains a sophisticated selection of full-sized premium skincare, haircare and makeup treasures.’
This calendar gives more of a traditional feel with no fuss packaging however, it only has 12 doors to open instead of the usual 24, which does warrant its lower price. The design does not leave many options for repurposing other than as another advent calendar.
