MAINLAND urgency dissolves as the road narrows and water edges closer. Canals catch the light. Mangroves replace concrete. Even the air seems to slow, moving at its own pace.

Carey Island lies just off Selangor’s west coast, low and flat against the Strait of Malacca. More than a century ago, this was a mangrove swamp - tidal, waterlogged and inhospitable. In the early 1900s, the land was gradually reclaimed, transforming an intertidal landscape into one of Malaysia’s most enduring agricultural estates.

That history still defines the island today. Water is never far away. The ground remains soft and low-lying. Every canal, embankment and planting decision reflects an understanding that this is land borrowed from the sea, not taken from it.

What exists now is a carefully managed landscape, where agriculture, ecology and human activity coexist. 

Canals thread through the land, managing water that never stays still. Birds arrive, depart and return, drawn by mangroves, wetlands and open skies. Working palm oil estates, research facilities and protected ecosystems function as parts of a single living system.

Largely owned and managed by SD Guthrie, Carey Island is treated as a shared home for people, palms and the many forms of delicate life that depend on its land and waters.

"Beyond Zero", a philosophy rooted in place

On Carey Island, sustainability is the organising principle. Guthrie’s “Beyond Zero” Framework reflects a shift in thinking, from minimising harm to actively strengthening the systems that sustain life. It is structured around three interconnected pillars:

  1. Zero, focused on reducing emissions and preventing deforestation.
  2. Restore, centred on conserving and regenerating ecosystems.
  3. Transform, aimed at improving lives and livelihoods across the value chain.
“The shift is not about doing less harm. It is about creating a positive impact for people, nature and climate,” says Guthrie chief sustainability officer Rashyid Redza Anwarudin.

Protecting Carey Island's green edge

Resilience begins at the shoreline. Mangrove forests fringe much of Carey Island’s coast, forming dense, living buffers between land and sea. Their tangled roots hold soil in place, slow erosion and absorb the force of tides and waves. In the calm waters they create, marine life shelters. Above ground, birds and insects move between roots and branches, sustaining interconnected food webs.

“If it is an open sea without mangrove, most of the infrastructure here would have been wiped out. Mangrove is our defence. Protecting these ecosystems requires active care. Mangrove restoration and replanting efforts help stabilise eroded shorelines while allowing natural systems to recover and adapt. Without mangroves, there is no stable shoreline. Without a stable shoreline, there is no island to sustain, says Guthrie conservation and biodiversity unit head Siti Norralakmam Yahya.

Healing the foundations of life

Move inland and the landscape shifts again. At the heart of Carey Island lies a 30ha biodiversity park, an intentional pause within a working plantation.

Planted with native forest trees, including rare and endangered species, the park is land set aside not for yield, but for ecological function. Developed with research institutions and conservation partners, it supports restoration studies, seed collection and long-term monitoring.

As the forest matured, wildlife followed. Birdlife, in particular, has flourished, with a hundred species recorded to date across the island’s habitats, a visible sign that ecological conditions are improving.

From a purely financial perspective, the park does not generate direct returns. Its value lies in resilience, biodiversity and life itself. This is proof that conservation and productive agriculture can coexist.

A regenerative loop

Palm oil production on Carey Island does not follow a linear path. Instead, it moves through a regenerative loop shaped by land, water and time.

Regeneration begins in the soil. As a long-term crop, oil palms remain in the ground for decades, making soil health crucial for both productivity and climate resilience. 

Organic matter from the fields and mills is returned to the land, replenishing nutrients and improving moisture retention. Precision agriculture ensures fertilisers and inputs are applied only where needed, reducing runoff and waste.

Over time, healthier soils produce higher yields from the same land, reducing pressure to clear new areas elsewhere. Improving yield becomes a conservation strategy.

“It is not just about one thing in isolation. It is about the whole ecosystem, the land, the water, the palms and the people,” says Guthrie chief innovation and technology officer Dr David Ross Appleton.

Thinking in generations

Some of the most consequential decisions on Carey Island are invisible at first glance. They begin with seeds as well as with the people whose lives will grow alongside them.

When you plant a seed, it is there for twenty or twenty-five years. You do not get a second chance to change it. That really is the definition of thinking for the future,” says Appleton.

Oil palm is a long-term crop, and the choices made at planting shape everything that follows, such as yields, land use and environmental impact, for decades. But they also shape livelihoods. A palm planted today will support workers, families and surrounding communities long after the initial decision has been made.

Carey Island is home to plantation communities as well as the Mah Meri, Indigenous people with deep cultural ties to the island’s land and coastal ecosystems. Decisions about what is planted, where and how are therefore never purely technical. They influence how people live, work and remain connected to the landscape over time.

Thus, advances in genomics and seed science have allowed Guthrie to develop higher-yielding, more climate-resilient oil palm varieties designed to perform better under changing conditions.

“More than three million people in Malaysia are dependent on the industry itself, either directly or indirectly,” Rashyid says.

Innovation as care

A seed designed to last decades must be matched with systems built to last just as long. On Carey Island, technology is used not to extract faster, but to work smarter. Drones support precision agriculture. Robotics and mechanisation take on the most physically demanding tasks, improving safety and consistency.

“Mechanisation and automation are not about removing jobs. They are about making better jobs, safer jobs, more attractive jobs, higher-value jobs,” Appleton says. 

Automation also allows resources to be used more carefully and predictably to support productivity while reducing strain on both people and the environment. This creates a system where work is safer, skills are elevated and livelihoods are strengthened. In this way, Guthrie’s innovation becomes another form of care for people, just as much as for the land.

From care to custodianship

Carey Island’s evolution has never been the work of one organisation alone. Researchers, communities, conservation groups and supply-chain partners all play a role.

“This is not something one company can do alone. Everybody in the value chain has a role to play. If you come to Carey Island, you can see the entire value chain, from estates and mills to research and development. Palm oil is deeply intertwined with daily life in Malaysia, and more than three million people depend on this industry. Seeing how it operates matters,” says Rashyid.

As the light softens over canals and mangroves, Carey Island feels less like a destination and more like a promise, built slowly, through patience, responsibility and care. Here, the future is not rushed. It is planted, protected and given time to grow. Carey Island is open to visitors.
