The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed the employment-landscape in unimaginable ways, which has exposed recent graduates to a myriad of uncertainties. While the M.A. International Studies programme at SSIS equips the students with new and specialized skill-sets, the  new graduates might  still encounter certain doubts and dilemmas regarding the career choices they should make. The Career Advancement Cell (CAC) has been conceived with the objective of bridging this gap between academics and employability.

What is the Career Advancement Cell (CAC)?

It is a student-led initiative that aims to foster a positive space of interaction that facilitates information exchange, capacity-building, and networking. The CAC has been established with the purpose of helping SSIS students their journey towards the professional world.

Modules at the Symbiosis School of International Studies

Symbiosis School of International Studies (SSIS) has a unique approach in teaching the MA International Studies programme. The broad field of interdisciplinary study is divided into different courses, and students are encouraged to relate theoretical concepts learned in classrooms to contemporary global scenarios.

The course on mainstream IR theories and concepts introduces students to the domain of international relations. The Diplomacy and Foreign Policy module teaches the students the contemporary inter-state relations, how states engage with each other and how states formulate their foreign policies in different scenarios.

Modules such as International Communication and International Relations And Digital Longform Journalism incorporate the importance of political and corporate communication and equip the students with various communication and technical skills.

Students at SSIS also have Research Methodology as part of the course, which gives a comprehensive understanding of academic research and different research techniques.

The Area Studies elective enables students to specifically focus on a particular region (Asia or Europe and North America) and learn about the history, culture, political process, political economy, defense and security, and the foreign policy of the individual states of that region.

Evolution of Indian Strategic Thought seeks to familiarize with the concept of strategic culture and then takes a deep dive into India’s decision making and its culture; it highlights India’s ancient state and statecraft while encouraging specific Indian thinkers and texts.

SSIS with its unique, diverse and interrelated combinations of subjects provides holistic skills which enable students to work in a variety of sectors. Subjects like International Law enable the student to understand the relevance and concept of international law, and combining it with International Conflict Resolution and Human Rights & Peace Study, the student is able to understand and interpret any international issue from a variety of angles, thus providing a holistic approach.

Further, subjects like Geopolitics-risk analysis engage in explaining operational implications from geopolitical analysis for businesses and decision-makers, which make students an ideal fit for an employer who operates in an unprecedented global arena.

What would an SSIS student bring to the table?

While similar in origin, International Studies and International Relations are two distinct fields. International Relations emphasizes on global affairs related to politics, economics and law, while International Studies adds to the equation  the social and cultural dynamics of countries, thus providing a holistic understanding of events and scenarios in the international geopolitical environment.

International Studies is genuinely one of the most eminent fields of study, especially in the light of an increasing number of global events, which echo the socio-political and economic lives of nations worldwide.

With a major in International Studies, the students gain in-depth knowledge of  history, geography, world affairs, politics, economics, culture, and language. Their soft skills reach a top-notch level upon their graduation, and these scholars make exceptional speakers, listeners, critical thinkers and researchers, problem solvers and writers. The most prominent careers that they are involved in include jobs related to policy making , politics, economics, business, law, academia, media and risk analysis to name a few. This sort of foundation qualifies them to work across sectors: international and intergovernmental organizations; government, corporate, and non-profit sectors.

There are so many excellent qualities that students build up with a Master in International Studies. All of those are transferable, meaning that they can use them in diverse aspects of their life that do not necessarily relate specifically to international studies.
Just so, SSIS graduates are all set to break the stereotypes and pursue exciting and versatile careers in fields as diverse and interconnected as the world today.
