What to Know About Child Hunger

Hunger negatively impacts a child's physical and cognitive development.

Without enough to eat and the right nutritional balance, children are at high risk of becoming acutely malnourished and having their growth severely stunted.

Without food, children can't receive an education.

Kids can't be hungry for knowledge if they are hungry for food. Hungry children are more likely to have lower math scores, repeat a grade, come to school late, or miss school entirely.

In food crises, women and girls are usually the most vulnerable.

Globally, women and girls typically eat the least and eat last. Women frequently reduce their own food intake to help provide for other household members, and girls’ responsibilities increase alongside food insecurity.

Save the Children is working in 34 different countries to address the global hunger crisis, providing essential aid to the children and families who need it most.

SUDAN

Due to conflict, Sudan is facing the world's largest internal displacement crisis. Over 9 million children in Sudan are being impacted by severe famine and food shortages.

Save the Children has responded by providing cash assistance and nutrition supplements to families in need, which helped 2-year-old Biel* recover from severe malnutrition.

SYRIA

After twelve years of brutal conflict and displacement in Syria, more than half the population is facing severe food insecurity.

We provide food and nutrition support to ensure children are healthy and well nourished, and help families find sustainable incomes to meet their needs.

SOMALIA

Due to climate disasters, conflict, and rising food prices, 51% of Somalia's population is undernourished or at risk of acute malnutrition.

With your support, we can continue providing essential aid and nutritional supplements to internally displaced persons (IDP) camps throughout the country.

GAZA

Food production has been completely halted due to conflict, making humanitarian aid a necessity to protect children and families from famine.

As of December 2024, Save the Children has provided aid to more than 707,185 people across the occupied Palestinian territory with the help of our partners.

The fight against hunger starts at home.

Today, an estimated 12 million children are struggling with hunger in America, and the poorest families are often hit the hardest.

  • Food scarcity is highest in Louisiana, where 25% of families with children struggle with hunger.
  • Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Washington, D.C. all report a 22% rate of family hunger.
  • In Maryland, Hispanic and Black families are almost 4 times as likely to face hunger as white families.

Save the Children doesn't just fight against hunger globally, but also domestically. From our nutrition advocacy work to our food distribution programs, we make sure that every child has what they need to thrive, no matter where they are.

Whether it is conflict, climate disasters, or rampant economic inflation, many conditions can make food scarce and leave families struggling to provide.

Hunger is the greatest threat to children today. But together, we can fight for their futures.
