Rise of the Jellycat

With their floppy ears, adorable facial features, and ultra-soft fur, Jellycats have quickly become more than just toys- they’ve evolved into a phenomenon!

From cosy nurseries to adult collectors’ shelves, Jellycats have surged in popularity in recent years, spreading joy and comfort to collectors of all ages.

Jellycat was founded in London in 1999, imagined by a group of talented designers, Thomas and William Gatacre, who wanted to create something new and different in the plush toy market. They strived to create toys that were not only soft and cuddly but also quirky and unique, determined to set themselves apart from more traditional stuffed animals.

But it was their signature combination of soft, velvety fabrics, imaginative creatures, and a hint of humour that caught the public’s eye. Their first release featured a line of playful animals, but it wasn’t until they expanded their range to include more diverse creatures, that the brand began to capture a wider audience.

So why are Jellycats so popular?

Unique design and collectible factor

Plants to fruits to teapots, Jellycat is known for making pretty much any object into an adorable fluffy toy. The uniqueness of the soft cuddly toys makes them the perfect collectible items.

With Jellycat constantly bringing out new collections, they are ideal for consumers of all ages to repeatedly buy and add to their vast collection.

Although, the items are all distinct and completely different from each other, the same cute little eyes and curvy smile can be found on all toys, making them pair together as a collection perfectly.

Cuteness and emotional attachment

From buying newborns their first traditional jellycat bashful bunny to giving your football fan partner a football plushie, you can be sure to find something adorable and unique at Jellycat.

Jellycat have perfected the feeling of warm comfort and childlike wonder through their fluffy toys. Adults are reminded of the childhood excitement in getting a new teddy when picking out their latest Jellycat buy, making customers come back time and time again to replicate this nostalgic feeling.

Social media influence

Jellycat created their instagram account in 2022 and post cute animated videos of Bashful Bunny and Bartholomew Bear with their friends that endear Jellycat fans of all ages. Who could resist buying an adorable sad looking frog when it’s brought to life through short animations!

TikTok influencers including Spencer Barbosa and Davina Dickinson have added even more fuel to Jellycats’ fire by posting about their own love for the Jellycat brand and showing off their own collections proudly to their followers online.

So what’s next for Jellycat?

Jellycat have continued to grow enormously in previous years, opening pop up stores with limited edition Jellycats in Shanghai, New York, Paris and of course London! Their audience has grown incredibly with no signs of slowing down with collections of new Jellycats being released four times a year.
