Smarter processes through digital innovation

Better processes mean better results. 72% of the organisations we've worked with say we've helped them optimise their processes, cutting cost, speeding up delivery and freeing up resources.

Automation for time saving

We help organisations save valuable time through the automation of repetitive and time consuming manual tasks.

Our activity:

Working in collaboration with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, we developed an AI-driven system that automatically generates balanced on-call schedules. Designed with clinicians to incorporate real-world factors such as annual leave and working patterns, producing rotas that at more fair, practical and predictable.

Impact:

Reducing the administrative burden of rota planning frees up clinicians to spend more time on valuable patient-facing work. Using a human-centred approach also results in less demanding shift patterns for staff, improving team wellbeing and supporting better healthcare delivery. This also supports the AI opportunities action plan, to improve lives and enhance the performance of essential public services.

Building resilience

Our activity:

Through innovative tools we enable organisations to make more informed decisions and manage risk. Previously, we have worked with Connected Places Catapult as part of a partner consortium on the Climate Resilience Demonstrator (CReDo) project, an initiative designed to improve the resilience of UK utility infrastructure to climate change. Building on this work, our research software engineering team has helped develop a digital elicitation tool. This turns expert insight into evidence that can support modelling, risk assessment, and investment decisions to support the climate resilience of critical infrastructure.

Impact:

Essential for bridging data gaps, the tool streamlines the analysis of expert knowledge, enabling faster and more consistent decision-making. This informs long-term adaptation planning and strengthens climate resilience, supporting key national strategies such as the National Adaptation Programme.

Enhancing efficiency and reducing disruptions

We're making it easier for organisations to find the information they need, keep complex scientific instruments running reliably and access higher-quality data.

Working with the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) we are:

  • Building a platform to enable quick access across a range of documents such as operational guidance, scientific literature and maintenance records
  • Creating a unified system to analyse all health-check signals from the instruments and predict necessary maintenance in advance
  • Developing automated pipelines to provide scientists with high-quality data, which can automatically correct disturbances, reducing manual processing time

Through these digital innovations, we're reducing manual effort and improving efficiency, allowing researchers to focus on further research and discovery.

"Together, we are embedding advanced AI into the heart of our telescopes and data systems, building observatories that are not just automated, but truly intelligent. This partnership strengthens South Africa’s leadership in innovative astronomy while creating powerful opportunities for students and researchers across Africa to engage with cutting-edge AI-driven science."

Professor Stephen Potter, Head of Astronomy at the South African Astronomical Observatory

Enabling innovation through data sharing

Our activity:

We're helping the NHS share patient data safely, without compromising privacy. Safe and secure data sharing is critical for accelerating life-saving innovation, particularly in areas such as healthcare where sensitive patient data raises privacy challenges. Working with Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust, we developed a tool to assess the quality of synthetic data. Synthetic data replicates the statistical properties of real-world data, enabling organisations to supplement or replace real datasets while addressing data access and privacy challenges. By identifying where the data failed to achieve the usability threshold, recommendations are provided to enable data sharing without re-identification risks.

Impact:

By improving understanding of synthetic data and confidence in how it can be used and shared safely, we can drive scientific discoveries, reduce R&D timescales and encourage further innovation.
