Knowledge sharing

We support UKRI’s open research principles by helping organisations develop a connected approach, breaking down information silos and promoting collaboration. This knowledge sharing is essential for organisational productivity and growth.

Our activity:

We are working with Heritage Science Data Service to develop and host a virtual research environment that brings together data from historical research projects and catalogues across the UK. Over the next five years, the programme will make these valuable datasets freely available, expanding access to research resources and supporting a more connected research community. At its heart, this work reflects our broader commitment to making data, research and technology more accessible by lowering the barriers for entry. Which as a part of this programme helps historical resources to be discovered, explored and used by anyone who needs them.

Impact:

Enabling researchers to work more efficiently, collaborate more effectively and gain faster insights. It removes barriers to efficient research created by fragmented data and limited access to specialist infrastructure, helping researchers tackle complex challenges and maximise the impact of their work.

Increasing productivity through data-driven decisions

We're helping manufacturers cut product development time and cost by replacing physical testing with simulation. In line with the UK's IS8 Advanced Manufacturing ambitions, computational chemistry simulations can predict the properties of novel formulations, generating robust, reproducible insights into product development.

Our activity:

Falcon Project Ltd partnered with us to find a safer, faster way to assess and refine new material formulations without relying solely on physical testing. The developed workflows use computer simulations to model material behaviour at a molecular level, providing insight into properties such as strength, flexibility, compatibility between components, and surface adhesion.

Impact:

The digital assets can be used across a wide range of sectors such as aerospace, automotive and advanced manufacturing, where performance, safety and sustainability are critical. By reducing costs, material waste, time to market and increasing accuracy and decision-making power, computational chemistry is changing the way UK companies think about materials development.

“We are in an exciting time where computer simulations are capable of leading R&D experiments and the highly skilled team at the Hartree Centre have enabled Falcon to further this journey by creating future options and possibilities for the UK.”

Future-proofing efficiency

We are driving growth by helping organisations adapt to emerging technologies more efficiently, reducing costs, improving sustainability and ensuring critical software remains fit for the future.

Our activity:

Through our collaboration with the Met Office, we developed PSyclone, an open-source tool that enables weather and climate models to evolve alongside the latest advances in computing. PSyclone automates the transformation of code for emerging computer architectures, helping ensure models remain compatible with newer systems while maintaining reliability.

Impact:

PSyclone helps deliver faster and, therefore, more energy-efficient simulations, helping improve weather forecasting and climate science. Used within the ‘LFRic’ atmosphere model and the ‘NEMO’ ocean model, its recent integration into NEMO's official build system ensures users can access the latest optimisations without disrupting established workflows. As a part of the NEMO package, PSyclone is being used globally for weather prediction and climate research.

Developing tools for the research community

We believe that providing access to the latest digital tools enables greater collaboration and a more productive research community. To support this, we have developed open-source tools that help researchers conduct, analyse, and share valuable scientific research.

FreeGSNKE is a Python simulation tool for studying and optimising plasma shaping and control. It supports researchers in advancing plasma control and equilibrium modelling, accelerating progress towards commercial fusion energy. Developed through the Fusion Computing Lab collaboration with the UK Atomic Energy Authority, FreeGSNKE is publicly available, accelerating innovation and collaboration in fusion research.

Qiskit is the IBM-developed open-source software development kit for quantum computing. Today, it’s one of the most widely used ways to design, test and run quantum algorithms. As the ecosystem has grown, Qiskit has expanded to include community-driven application-focused modules such as Qiskit Machine Learning, which the Hartree Centre continues to develop and maintain. The open-source library is supported by a global quantum computing community, supporting the National Quantum Strategy and helping position the UK at the forefront of quantum computing innovation.
